Founded in 1996 by two school friends Andy Murnane and Brotha D, this Papatoetoe-based music label launched its first album, Southside Story on 11 April 2000 and was home to many gold and platinum-selling New Zealand hip hop and R&B artists such as Savage, Aaradhna, Adeaze and Mareko. The proudly Polynesian Hip Hop and R&B label continues to support local musicians. They are recognised entrepreneurs in Aotearoa New Zealand who started their own clothing label, retail stores, and music education programme in the community. Dawn Raid's name has it's roots in a long history of political upheavals and injustice against the Polynesian people in New Zealand during a period of time called the "Dawn Raid Era" of the early 1970's.
