On 18 June 1958, New Zealand's first supermarket, Otahuhu Foodtown, originally opened as the 'Otara Foodtown' was opened at 626 Great South Rd. The supermarket was 1,400 square metres on a 1.1-hectare site. Business people involved early in this enterprise were Mr Ah Chee, Norman Kent, John Brown and Brian Picot. A second Foodtown was built and opened in Takanini in 1961. The former supermarket building in Great South Road now accommodates a number of shops and a petrol station.
