The Papatoetoe First World War Memorial on the corner of Great South Road and St George Street was formally unveiled on 29 September 1922. The stone arch and gates were erected by public subscription as a district war memorial following World War I. A combined schools commemorative ceremony where 350 children laid wreaths and floral emblem tributes was held at the site on Anzac Day, 25 April 1922. In this 1922 photograph the gates are almost totally covered in floral tributes. These gates once served as the main entrance to the school. The Memorial is a significant heritage landmark, an important site for annual Anzac Day commemorations. The memorial also marks one of the landmark corners in the Papatoetoe area - this one often being called 'School Corner'. Others include Hunters Corner, Weighbridge Corner and Docherty's Corner.
